What Are NFTs and Why Should You Care?

In the simplest terms, NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are like digital certificates of ownership for things you buy online. Think of it like purchasing a limited-edition print of an artwork or a collector’s item, but instead of a physical object, it’s digital—like an image, video, or even a piece of music.
Real-World Example: Collecting Art and Memorabilia

Imagine you’re a fan of a famous artist and you purchase a signed, limited-edition print of their work. This print is special because there are only a few like it, and it has the artist’s signature verifying its authenticity. You hang it on your wall, knowing you own something unique that can increase in value over time.

Now, picture this scenario in the digital world. Instead of a physical print, you buy a digital artwork. How do you prove you own something unique? That’s where NFTs come in. When you buy an NFT, you get a certificate (stored on the blockchain) that proves you’re the official owner of that digital artwork. Even though people can see a copy of the image online, only you own the original, verified version.

Real-World Example: Collecting Cards

Remember collecting cards, like football or Pokémon cards? Each card has a unique value based on its rarity and condition. Some are common, and others are extremely rare and worth a lot more. NFTs work similarly—some are very common, while others are rare or one-of-a-kind, making them highly valuable.

But here’s the twist: Unlike physical cards, NFTs can’t get lost, damaged, or worn out. Their value is protected and preserved digitally.
How Are NFTs Bought and Sold?

NFTs are usually bought and sold on online platforms, just like you’d buy a product from an online store. The big difference is that instead of paying with regular money, transactions are often done using cryptocurrency (think of it like digital money). One of the most popular platforms for buying and selling NFTs is OpenSea.

Why NFTs Matter for Artists and Collectors

For artists like me, NFTs offer a way to share our work with a global audience in a new and exciting format. It’s also a way for collectors to invest in digital art and support artists they love. Plus, each time the NFT is resold, the original artist can earn royalties, ensuring that they benefit from their work over time.

NFTs are opening up new possibilities for creativity, ownership, and collecting in the digital age. Whether you’re an art lover, a collector, or just curious, NFTs offer a new way to experience and invest in the arts.
